Hilton Honors:
The Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about Hilton Honors — tiers, earning, dynamic pricing, the fifth night free, and how to squeeze the most value from every point. Updated for 2026.
Programme Overview
Hilton Honors is free to join and open to anyone. It covers more than 9,100 properties across 26 brands in 143 countries, with over 243 million members globally and a strong footprint in the UK.
Points are earned primarily through hotel stays at any Hilton-branded property worldwide, though there are meaningful ways to earn through credit cards, partners, and promotions without setting foot in a hotel.
Points do not expire provided your account has at least one qualifying transaction (earning or spending) every 24 months.
Important: You must book directly with Hilton (via Hilton.com, the Hilton app, or by calling the hotel) to earn points. Bookings through Booking.com, Expedia, or other OTAs do not qualify.
Tier Structure (Updated for 2026)
Hilton Honors has five membership tiers. As of January 2026, Gold and Diamond are easier to reach, and a new ultra-premium tier has been introduced.

How to Earn Hilton Honors Points
Hotel Stays
The foundation of earning. Points rates vary by brand. Elite bonuses stack on top: Gold earns 80% more, Diamond earns 100% more.
| Brand Category | Base Points per $1 |
|---|---|
| Hilton Hotels, Conrad, Waldorf Astoria, DoubleTree, Curio, Canopy, Hampton, Garden Inn, Tapestry, Embassy Suites | 10 points |
| Tru by Hilton, Home2 Suites | 5 points |
| Homewood Suites, Spark by Hilton (from Jan 2026) | 5 points |
| LivSmart Studios | 3 points |
American Express Membership Rewards (UK)
The most efficient way for UK travellers to accumulate Hilton Honors points without staying at hotels. Points transfer at a 1:2 ratio — 1 Amex point becomes 2 Hilton Honors points.
Amex Preferred Rewards Gold
Welcome bonus of 20,000 Amex points = 40,000 Hilton points. No annual fee in year one. Best entry-level option.
Amex Platinum
Welcome bonus of 50,000 Amex points = 100,000 Hilton points. Also grants complimentary Gold status.
Promotions & Partner Earning
Hilton runs regular promotions — often quarterly — that award bonus points. Common types include double/triple points on stays, bonus points at specific brands or regions, and targeted offers based on your stay history.
Beyond stays and credit cards, you can earn through car hire (Alamo, Enterprise), the Hilton Dining Programme, the Hilton shopping portal, and Amazon.
Always register for promotions before your stay. Unregistered promotions are not credited retroactively.
How Redemption Works: Dynamic Pricing
Hilton eliminated its fixed award chart years ago. Instead, Hilton uses full dynamic pricing, meaning the points cost of any given night is calculated in relation to the current cash rate and demand.
Standard Room Rewards
The awards you want. Drawn from a dedicated award inventory, these are the most points-efficient way to book. As of late 2025, the maximum a standard room award can cost is 250,000 points per night (up from 120,000 in 2022). Most properties cost considerably less.
Premium Room Rewards
When no standard inventory is available, Hilton shows a Premium Room Reward reflecting the full cash cost in points. These can be extraordinarily expensive — a room costing 150,000 as a Standard Reward might show 1.8 million as Premium. Almost always avoid these.
Points & Money
Blend points and cash on any booking using a slider on the payment page. The blend only makes sense if you are getting at least 0.4p of cash saving per point used. Watch the numbers as you adjust the slider.
The 5th Night Free
All elite members (Silver and above) receive the fifth night free when booking consecutive award stays of five or more nights using Standard Room Rewards.
Example: A five-night stay at 60,000 points/night costs 240,000 points (4 × 60,000) rather than 300,000 — a 20% saving. This applies to stays of up to 20 nights, with a free night at the 5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th positions.
Understanding Hilton Point Values
The best redemption values arise when you:
- Use the fifth night free — improving per-point value by 25% on a five-night stay
- Stay at luxury properties (Conrad, Waldorf Astoria) where cash rates are high but the points cap keeps costs reasonable
- Book during high-demand periods when cash rates spike but capped points costs remain stable
Avoid: Transferring Hilton points to airline miles (10:1 ratio destroys value), Premium Room Rewards at ultra-luxury properties, and Amazon/gift card redemptions (well below average value).

Recent Changes 2025–2026
Points Devaluations (2025)
Standard room award cap raised to 200,000 points (May) then 250,000 points (September). Properties that cost 120,000 in 2022 can now cost 250,000.
Reduced Earning at Homewood Suites & Spark (Jan 2026)
Base point earning dropped from 10 to 5 points per dollar. Elite bonuses still apply on top.
New Tier Structure (Jan 2026)
Gold: 40 → 25 nights. Diamond: 60 → 50 nights. New Diamond Reserve tier at 80 nights + £14,220 spend.
End of Rollover Nights (from 2027)
Nights earned in excess of tier thresholds in 2026 will not roll over to 2027.
Spend-Based Qualification (from 2026)
Status can now be tracked by nights, stays, or USD eligible spend. The previous base points qualification path has been removed.
Practical Tips for UK Travellers
Book directly, always.
Points are only earned on direct bookings. Booking via an OTA sacrifices all earning. Elite status benefits also require direct bookings.
Register for promotions before you stay.
Promotions are not credited retroactively. Check the Hilton Honors promotions page at the start of each quarter.
Use the fifth night free on every 5-night+ stay.
If you have Silver or above (including Amex Platinum holders), book five-night award stays as one reservation. The 20% saving is automatic.
Target Conrad and Waldorf Astoria for best CPP.
At luxury properties where cash rates are high, the standard award cap creates the most favourable exchange rate.
Hold off on transferring Amex points until you have a booking.
Transfers from Membership Rewards to Hilton are irreversible. Confirm dates and availability first.
Watch for Amex to Hilton transfer bonuses.
A 20–30% bonus can meaningfully increase the Hilton balance you receive. Sign up for email alerts.
Do not transfer Hilton points to airlines.
The 10:1 ratio destroys value. Keep hotel points in hotel programmes.
Search Rewardo before committing.
Check current standard award availability and pricing. Community-sourced data helps you plan around dates where standard awards are available.
Is Hilton Honors Worth It?
Yes — with caveats. Hilton Honors has become less generous over the past few years. The devaluations of 2025 are real, and the standard award cap has more than doubled since 2022.
However, the programme still delivers genuine value when used correctly. The 2026 tier changes make Gold status meaningfully easier to achieve. The Conrad London St. James and Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh remain outstanding redemptions. The fifth night free is a legitimate 20% saving. And the Amex partnership gives UK travellers a realistic way to build a balance without relying entirely on stays.
Search smart, redeem strategically, and use Rewardo to find the best availability before you book.
How Hilton Honors compares
Hilton Honors is the biggest of the four major chains by footprint, but its points are also the least valuable per unit. Here's how it stacks up against IHG One Rewards, World of Hyatt and Marriott Bonvoy for UK travellers.
| Feature | Hilton Honors | IHG One Rewards | World of Hyatt | Marriott Bonvoy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical value per point (UK) | ~0.3–0.4p | ~0.4p | ~1.4p | ~0.6p |
| Award pricing | Dynamic — no chart | Dynamic — no chart | Category award chart | Dynamic — no chart |
| Points expire after | 24 months inactivity | 12 months (never at Silver+) | 24 months inactivity | 24 months inactivity |
| UK Amex Membership Rewards transfer | 1 : 2 | 1 : 1 | Not a partner | 1 : 1.5 |
| UK co-branded credit card | No (Gold via Amex Platinum) | No | No | Yes (Amex + Currensea debit) |
| Consecutive-night perk | 5th night free (Silver+) | 4th night free (US cards only) | None | 5th night free (all members) |
Where Hilton wins
Sheer reach — around 9,100 hotels across 26 brands, with 700+ in the UK alone, so you'll almost always find a Hilton where you're going. UK travellers get complimentary Gold status — and its 80% points bonus, free breakfast and the fifth-night-free benefit — simply by holding an Amex Platinum, with no nights required, and Amex Membership Rewards transfer in at a generous 1:2. The fifth night free on Standard Room Rewards effectively takes 20% off longer award stays.
Where it falls short
Value. At roughly 0.3–0.4p per point, Hilton points are worth far less than Hyatt's (~1.4p) or Marriott's (~0.6p), so you need to earn a lot of them. Pricing is fully dynamic with no published award chart, Standard Room Rewards can reach as high as 250,000 points a night at peak luxury properties, and there's no UK co-branded Hilton credit card beyond the Amex route.
