Marriott Bonvoy:
The Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about Marriott Bonvoy — tiers, earning, dynamic pricing, the massive brand portfolio, airline transfer partners, and how to maximise your points value as a UK traveller. Updated for 2026.
Programme Overview
Marriott Bonvoy launched in February 2019, unifying the former Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG), and Ritz-Carlton Rewards into a single programme. It is the world's largest hotel loyalty programme, encompassing 9,600+ properties across 143+ countries and territories, spanning more than 40 brands.
As of the end of 2025, Marriott Bonvoy has over 271 million members, making it by far the largest hotel loyalty programme globally. The sheer scale of the portfolio means you can earn and redeem almost anywhere in the world, from budget-friendly Fairfield by Marriott to ultra-luxury Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis properties.
Points expire after 24 months of account inactivity. Any qualifying activity — earning, redeeming, buying, or transferring points — resets the clock. Elite status activity also counts, so active travellers rarely need to worry about expiry.
Important: You must book directly with Marriott (via marriott.com, the Marriott Bonvoy app, or by calling Marriott) to earn points and receive elite benefits. Bookings through Booking.com, Expedia, or other OTAs do not qualify for points or elite night credits.
Tier Structure
Marriott Bonvoy has six membership tiers. Status is earned in a calendar year and valid through the end of February two years later (e.g., earning Platinum Elite in 2026 provides status through 28 February 2028).

Lifetime Status: Silver Elite = 250 nights + 5 years elite. Gold Elite = 400 nights + 7 years elite. Platinum Elite = 600 nights + 10 years elite. Lifetime status ensures permanent benefits without annual requalification.
How to Earn Marriott Bonvoy Points
Hotel Stays
The foundation of earning. Points are earned on the full folio including room rate, dining, spa, and other eligible charges. Elite bonuses stack on top of the base rate.
| Brand Category | Base Points per $1 |
|---|---|
| Most brands (Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, JW Marriott, W Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Westin, Courtyard, etc.) | 10 points |
| Extended-stay brands (Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, Element, Marriott Executive Apartments) | 5 points |
| StudioRes | 4 points |
| Elite Tier | Bonus | Effective Earn (Standard Brands) |
|---|---|---|
| Member | None | 10 pts/$1 |
| Silver Elite | +10% | 11 pts/$1 |
| Gold Elite | +25% | 12.5 pts/$1 |
| Platinum Elite | +50% | 15 pts/$1 |
| Titanium / Ambassador | +75% | 17.5 pts/$1 |
UK Earning Options
Unlike World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy has excellent UK earning options through multiple card products, Amex transfer partnerships, and the Nectar loyalty programme. UK travellers can build a Bonvoy balance without ever staying at a Marriott property.
Amex UK MR Transfer
Transfer Amex Membership Rewards to Bonvoy at a 1:1.5 ratio (2 MR = 3 Bonvoy points). Transfers are instant. Periodic 30% bonus promotions increase the ratio to approximately 1:1.95 — wait for these if possible.
Marriott Bonvoy Amex Card (UK)
6 pts/£1 at Marriott properties, 2 pts/£1 everywhere else. 15 Elite Night Credits (ENCs) per year. Gold status with £15,000 annual spend. Free Night Award (25K cap) with £25,000 annual spend.
Bonvoy Debit Card (Currensea, UK)
Launched November 2025. £55/year. Silver status, 10 ENCs, 1 pt/£1 in the UK, 2 pts/£1 abroad, 0.5% FX fee. A solid everyday earning option that stacks with other cards.
Bonvoy Premium Debit (Currensea, UK)
£175/year. Gold status, 15 ENCs + up to 5 additional. 1.5 pts/£1 in the UK, 3 pts/£1 abroad. Free Night Awards based on foreign spend. The premium option for frequent international spenders.
Nectar Partnership (UK)
Launched July 2025. Transfer between Nectar and Bonvoy points. 500 free Nectar points just for linking accounts. Earn 500 bonus Nectar points per Marriott stay (up to 1,500). Adds everyday supermarket earning to your Bonvoy strategy.
Chase UK
No transfer partnership. Chase UK does not offer Marriott Bonvoy as a transfer partner. The US-only Chase Ultimate Rewards Marriott transfer is not available in the UK.
Card Stacking Tip: Premium debit card (15 ENCs) + Amex card (15 ENCs) = 30 ENCs from cards alone. That's Gold Elite status from card products without a single hotel stay, leaving you just 20 nights short of Platinum on stays alone.
Point Valuation
Promotions
Marriott runs frequent global promotions including double/triple point offers, stay-and-earn campaigns, and targeted bonuses. Amex MR transfer bonuses of 30% appear periodically and represent the best time to convert points.
Always register for promotions before your stay. Unregistered promotions are not credited retroactively. Check marriott.com/loyalty/promotions regularly.
How Redemption Works: Dynamic Pricing
Marriott eliminated its published award chart in March 2022 and moved to fully dynamic pricing. Award night costs now fluctuate based on demand, season, and other factors — similar to cash pricing. Hotels are still secretly assigned to categories 1 through 9, which set the approximate range of points pricing.
Dynamic Pricing Ranges by Category
Points per night for a standard room. Actual pricing fluctuates within these ranges.
| Category | Low End | High End |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5,000 | 18,000 |
| 2 | 10,000 | 28,000 |
| 3 | 15,000 | 36,500 |
| 4 | 22,000 | 55,000 |
| 5 | 35,000 | 76,000 |
| 6 | 40,000 | 88,000 |
| 7 | 50,000 | 105,000 |
| 8 | 52,000 | 140,000 |
| 9 | 88,000 | 152,000 |
Exception properties can go much higher. The Ritz-Carlton Maldives has been seen up to 198,000 points/night. North Island Seychelles (Marriott's most exclusive property) can reach 605,000 points/night.
Dynamic pricing has increased costs significantly since 2022. Category 5 maximum pricing has increased approximately 90% since the chart was eliminated. Use Rewardo to track pricing trends and find the best redemption value before booking.
Fifth Night Free
Available to all members regardless of elite status. Book 5 or more consecutive nights on points and the lowest-priced night is free — an effective 20% discount. This stacks: 10 nights = 2 free nights, 15 nights = 3 free nights.
- Cannot combine with Free Night Award certificates or Cash+Points bookings
- Resort fees still apply on the free night
- The free night is always the lowest-priced of the 5 nights
- Works across all properties and room types booked on points
Cash + Points
Some properties offer a Cash + Points option, combining a reduced points requirement with a cash co-pay. Availability is property-specific and not guaranteed. Points + Cash stays earn qualifying night credits and points on the cash portion. Fifth Night Free does not apply to Cash + Points bookings.

Airline Transfer Partners

Transfer Ratios
| Transfer Type | Ratio | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 3:1 | 3 Bonvoy pts = 1 airline mile |
| 60K Bonus | ~2.4:1 | Every 60,000 pts transferred earns 5,000 bonus miles (25,000 + 5,000 = 30,000) |
| United Special | ~2:1 | 10,000 bonus per 60,000 transferred (25,000 + 10,000 = 35,000) |
UK-Relevant Airline Partners
British Airways (Avios)
Virgin Atlantic
Emirates Skywards
Qatar Airways
Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer)
Aer Lingus (Avios)
Important: Airline transfers are one-way and irreversible. Processing takes 1–7 days. Always transfer in multiples of 60,000 to maximise the bonus. At ~0.7p per Bonvoy point, transferring to airlines generally only makes sense for high-value redemptions where miles are worth 1.5p+ each.
Practical Tips for UK Travellers
Stack card products for maximum ENCs.
The Premium Debit Card (15 ENCs) and Amex Card (15 ENCs) together give 30 Elite Night Credits per year from cards alone. That's Gold Elite status without a single hotel stay.
Wait for Amex MR transfer bonuses.
The standard 1:1.5 MR-to-Bonvoy ratio is already generous, but periodic 30% bonus promotions push it to ~1:1.95. Patience can yield significantly more Bonvoy points from the same Amex balance.
Leverage the Nectar partnership.
Since July 2025, you can transfer between Nectar and Bonvoy points. Link your accounts for 500 free Nectar points, and earn 500 bonus Nectar per Marriott stay (up to 1,500). Adds everyday supermarket earning to your strategy.
Use Rewardo to track dynamic pricing.
With no published award chart, point costs are unpredictable. Rewardo tracks pricing trends across Marriott properties so you can identify the best redemption deals and avoid overpaying.
Book 5+ nights for the Fifth Night Free.
Available to all members. Book 5 consecutive nights on points and the cheapest night is free -- a guaranteed 20% discount. Always check if extending your stay by a night would trigger the free night.
Suite Night Awards process 7 days before arrival.
As of 2026, SNAs process 7 days before check-in (up from 5 days). Mid-week bookings and shoulder-season stays have better upgrade odds than peak weekends.
Always register for promotions before stays.
Marriott runs frequent bonus point promotions. Registration is always required before your qualifying stay -- promotions are not credited retroactively. Check the promotions page regularly.
Consider airline transfers strategically.
Transfer in multiples of 60,000 to get bonus miles. United offers the best ratio (~2:1). For UK travellers, BA Avios and Virgin Atlantic transfers can unlock premium cabin flights worth £1,580+.
Is Marriott Bonvoy Worth It?
Yes — Marriott Bonvoy is an essential programme for UK travellers, especially those who value global coverage, multiple earning options, and airline transfer flexibility. With 9,600+ properties across 143+ countries, you can earn and redeem Bonvoy points virtually anywhere in the world.
The programme's main strength for UK travellers is its earning ecosystem. The Amex MR transfer partnership (1:1.5 ratio), the Marriott Bonvoy Amex card, the Currensea debit cards, and the Nectar partnership mean you can accumulate Bonvoy points through everyday spending without relying solely on hotel stays. No other hotel programme offers this breadth of UK earning options.
The move to dynamic pricing in 2022 is the programme's biggest weakness. Point costs are unpredictable and have risen significantly, eroding the per-point value. At approximately 0.7–0.8 US cents per point, Bonvoy points are worth less than half of Hyatt points. However, the sheer volume of points you can earn through card products and transfers helps offset the lower per-point value.
The airline transfer capability (40+ partners) is unique among hotel programmes and adds genuine flexibility. For UK travellers, being able to convert hotel points into BA Avios, Virgin Atlantic miles, or Emirates Skywards miles provides a valuable escape valve when hotel redemptions don't offer good value. The Fifth Night Free benefit is available to all members and provides a guaranteed 20% discount on longer stays.
For UK travellers who stay across multiple hotel brands globally, Marriott Bonvoy is hard to beat on coverage. Pair it with the right card products, wait for Amex transfer bonuses, and use Rewardo to find the best redemption values in a dynamic pricing world.
How Marriott Bonvoy compares
Marriott Bonvoy is the largest hotel programme in the world and the most flexible for airline transfers, with mid-pack point value. Here's how it compares with Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards and World of Hyatt.
| Feature | Hilton Honors | IHG One Rewards | World of Hyatt | Marriott Bonvoy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical value per point (UK) | ~0.3–0.4p | ~0.4p | ~1.4p | ~0.6p |
| Award pricing | Dynamic — no chart | Dynamic — no chart | Category award chart | Dynamic — no chart |
| Points expire after | 24 months inactivity | 12 months (never at Silver+) | 24 months inactivity | 24 months inactivity |
| UK Amex Membership Rewards transfer | 1 : 2 | 1 : 1 | Not a partner | 1 : 1.5 |
| UK co-branded credit card | No (Gold via Amex Platinum) | No | No | Yes (Amex + Currensea debit) |
| Consecutive-night perk | 5th night free (Silver+) | 4th night free (US cards only) | None | 5th night free (all members) |
Where Marriott wins
Scale and transfer flexibility. With 9,600+ hotels across more than 40 brands it offers the widest choice anywhere, and it's the only one of the four with 40+ airline transfer partners — including Avios via British Airways and Iberia — plus a 60,000-point transfer bonus. UK travellers have genuine card options (the Bonvoy Amex and the Currensea Bonvoy debit cards earn points and status), and the fifth night free applies to every member on award stays of five or more nights.
Where it falls short
Value and pricing. At ~0.6p per point Marriott sits below Hyatt, award pricing has been fully dynamic since the 2022 chart removal — Category 5 maximums are up roughly 90% since — and airline transfers run at a base 3:1 ratio that only makes sense for high-value miles. Top properties can be extreme: the Ritz-Carlton Maldives has been seen near 198,000 points a night.
Compare the others in depth: Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards and World of Hyatt.
